Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been released on Disney+ Hotstar. The Doctor Strange sequel starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Wong, has been praised for its visuals and the MCU’s first exploration of the horror genre. If you are a fan of superhero films and TV shows that offer a distinctive art style and unconventional narrative structure and capture the true essence of a comic book adaptation, then here are six titles available to stream in India. Watchmen (Amazon Prime Video)Zack Snyder is undoubtedly one of the most polarizing filmmakers today. Regardless of one’s opinions about the stories he tells through his films, there could be no argument that he is one of the very best when it comes to framing vibrant frames and astounding visuals. So it should come as no surprise that the 2009 film, Watchmen, is the first film on this list. Based on the critically acclaimed bestselling graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, the film is set in an alternate timeline where the United States won the Vietnam War with the help of superheroes called the Watchmen. The film is a satire on American society and the glorification of superheroes. It is widely regarded as one of the most underrated comic book adaptations of all time. Preacher (Amazon Prime Video)Originally created by The Boys writer Garth Enis, Preacher is a gothic horror comic series created for the Vertigo imprint owned by DC Comics. The TV series which debuted in 2016, was created by Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen. The plot follows a young preacher named Jesse Custer, who is known for his vices. But when he is imbued with new godlike abilities he decides to find its true meaning with the help of his ex-girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vampire named Cassidy. The series earned praise for its writing, visuals, and its excellent use of allegorical references. Doom Patrol (Rooster Teeth) If one were to find similarities between the DC Comics superhero team called Doom Patrol and Marvel’s iconic X-Men, they wouldn’t be too far off from the truth. Stan Lee allegedly took inspiration from the Doom Patrol to create the X-Men. However, the X-Men would become Marvel’s most popular franchise along with Spider-Man while Doom Patrol faded into relative obscurity. However, the new TV series, released in 2019 is the most underrated superhero TV series of all time. Lauded for its black comedy, social commentary, and excellent writing, it features an impressive ensemble of Dianne Guerrero, April Bowlby, Matt Bomer, Alan Tudyk, Brendan Fraser, Jovian Wade, and former James Bond – Timothy Dalton. Gotham (Netflix and Amazon Prime Video)Set in Gotham City from the Batman mythos, the story follows a young Detective Jim Gordon, long before he became Batman’s ally Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department. It also follows the story of a young Bruce Wayne who is struggling to cope with the loss of his parents, long before he donned the cape and cowl of the Dark Knight. The series earned a reputation for its often surreal set pieces, and unique aesthetic. It also showcased the origin story of several supervillains from Batman’s ‘rogues’ gallery’ such as the Riddler, Penguin, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Mad Hatter, and even the Joker. X Men: Days of Future Past (Disney+ Hotstar, Apple TV, Google Play, and Youtube Movies)The X-Men films haven’t always endeared to Marvel fans, despite some stellar films such as X-Men. X-Men II, X-Men: First Class, Logan, and Deadpool. However, the one film that truly brings the popular comic book characters to life is the 2014 film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film is set in the near future, where robotic beings called Sentients have driven the mutants to the brink of extinction. As a last-ditch effort, Wolverine is sent back to the 70s to prevent the Sentient project from being approved by the US government. The film features excellent performances by its star-studded ensemble and riveting storyline. Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) When Justice League was released in 2017, fans were left disappointed as the film was an amalgamation of different visions from different directors and different writers. The editing was poor, the pacing was inconsistent, and the story itself failed to connect with the audience. As reports emerged that the original cut of the film made by Zack Snyder was available, fans orchestrated a massive fan campaign called #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, which spread across the globe. And in 2021 Warner Bros yielded and Snyder was allowed to release his original film, with more than double the runtime of the original film, significantly upgraded visuals, and a more coherent storyline. It is widely regarded as one of the most definitive adaptations of the legendary Justice League.
