The Supreme Court is reviewing if live-streaming of the ongoing Ayodhya case may be done. Given the case is of immense public interest, broadcasting the proceedings live may not be bad idea. This would enhance transparency of the process. But there is also concern that it could end up becoming a television spectacle, and the spotlight may even influence the conduct of the court. Some states have decided not to implement the steep fines prescribed by the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act recently approved by Parliament. Under the law, states have the right to formulate their own law given that the subject falls in the Concurrent list of the Constitution. But the broader objective of reducing road fatalities should not be lost sight of. The new rules should be tested for some time to see if they bring greater discipline among road users and lead to lower accidents. The findings show traffic movement in our cities is significantly slower than in some international metropolitans. This calls for remedial measures. Places such as Stockholm and Singapore have introduced road pricing to reduce congestion. Perhaps India also ought to explore such measures.
