Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky is set to address the UN Security Council on Tuesday amid global outrage over what has been called a “massacre” in the Bucha town of the capital city of Kyiv. Bodies strewn across streets – as the Russian troops retreated – have put violence in the war-hit country under fresh spotlight as Russia has been accused of fresh war crimes. US president Joe Biden has yet again called Russia’s Vladimir Putin “a war criminal” as Washington slaps fresh punitive measures on Moscow. Karnataka Primary and Secondary education minister BC Nagesh on Monday said the government has decided against allowing teachers wearing hijab to take part in the invigilation process during the Class 10 examinations. Talking to the media, the minister said that the government decided not to task teachers wearing a hijab to invigilate examinations as it wouldn’t be ‘morally right’ for teachers to wear hijab, while the students aren’t allowed as per the orders of the Karnataka high court. “As hijab is not allowed inside the examination hall for students, to be morally right, we’re not forcing teachers who insist on wearing hijab to take up exam duty. We gave them the option to take exam duty or not,” said the minister for primary and secondary education. State-owned fuel retailers hiked the rates of petrol and diesel by 80 paise on Tuesday, the 13th increase in the last 15 days. In Delhi, petrol is now being sold at ₹104.61 per litre while diesel prices are at ₹ 95.87 per litre, according to the notification by fuel retailers. The latest hike has taken the overall increase since the ending of a four-and-half-month long hiatus in rate revision to ₹9.2 per litre. French far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, whose presidential campaign has gained momentum in recent days, on Monday captured 48.5% of voter intentions in an opinion poll of a likely runoff against Emmanuel Macron, the highest score she has ever notched. Actor Ram Charan, who is basking in the success of his latest release RRR, has said that he expected the film to be a hit but never thought it would earn the No 1 tag at the global box office on the opening weekend of its release. RRR is a fictional take on the younger days of celebrated freedom fighters, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Seetharama Raju, portrayed by Jr NTR and Ram Charan respectively. The film is set in pre-independence India. The movie also features Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Olivia Morris, Alison Doody, and Ray Stevenson. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj took seven wickets as South Africa made light work of bowling Bangladesh out for 53 in 19 overs in their second innings to claim a 220-run victory in the first Test at Kingsmead on Monday. It was the lowest Test innings total at Kingsmead, less than the 66 India managed in 1996. That’s all from us for now. We will be back with the evening news bulletin.
