The Supreme Court has sought a status report from the Uttarakhand government in the Haridwar hate speech case. The hate speech row is linked to the Dharam Sansad events held in the state in December. The top court gave the state government time till next Friday to file its response to a petition against the event. After notice was issued on the petition – filed by journalist Qurban Ali and a senior advocate Anjana Prakash in January – the Uttarakhand government sought more time to file a response. Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik’s petition seeking immediate release from prison in a money laundering case linked to Dawood Ibrahim will be heard in the Supreme Court, a bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana said on Wednesday. The bench, however, did not mention a date. The Bombay High Court had rejected the application by the minister arrested in February. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief J P Nadda on Wednesday formed a five-member fact-finding team to look into the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl, who died hours after she returned from a birthday party where the alleged sexual assault took place at Hanskhali in West Bengal’s Nadia district.
