Ukraine is fighting one of its toughest-ever battles as Russia closes in on Kyiv two days after the Kremlin launched an offensive and began a full-scale invasion. In a late-night video address, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that “night is more difficult than the day”. “I am turning to our defenders, male and female, on all fronts: this night the enemy will use all the forces it has to crush our defence in a treacherous, harsh and inhumane way,” he said.
Russia vetoed a resolution at the United Nations Security Council emergency meeting to stop its troops in Ukraine. India, China and the UAE skipped voting. “India is deeply disturbed by recent developments in Ukraine. We urge that all efforts are made for the immediate cessation of violence and hostilities. No solution can ever be arrived at the cost of human lives,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, TS Tirumurti, said at the meeting.
A day after Moscow began a full-scale invasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday in a televised address asked the Ukraine army to “overthrow the government.” “It seems like it will be easier for us to agree with you than this gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis,” he said amid global appeals to halt the Russian forces in the neighbouring country.
In a bid to increase the global pressure, the European Union announced the freezing of assets linked to Russia’s Vladimir Putin, foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and other high-ranking officials. This was after Lavrov declared Russia is ready to talk if Ukraine ‘lays down arms’.
India is fighting a race against time to evacuate its citizens to safety with more than 470 students being escorted across the border to Romania on Friday. Alternative land routes are being chalked out as Ukraine airspace remains closed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Vladimir Putin on Thursday and discussed the safety concerns.
