Mamata Banerjee says no entry for BJP in 2024’: ‘Will fight with all my might, Moose Wala death: Gangster Bishnoi moves Delhi HC after 'fake encounter' claim, NDA government minimized scope for corruption: PM Modi at Shimla rally, and other top news in this bulletin. Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday slammed the BJP-led central government amid recent action by the central probe agencies against opposition leaders of the likes of Lalu Yadav. In her comments – which coincide with the arrest of Delhi minister Satyendar Jain on Monday – the Bengal chief minister yet again alleged a misuse of central probe agencies. “The BJP is trying to silence the opposition with the use of central agencies. Are the probe agencies only against Jain, (Maharashtra minister) Nawab Malika, and not for the BJP leaders?” she asked. “The BJP-led government at the centre is adulterated. They have destroyed the country’s economy through disastrous decisions like demonetisation. It was a big scam,” the Trinamool chief said, addressing the party workers. Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is suspected to be involved in the killing of popular Punjabi singer-turned-Congress leader Sidhu Moose Wala, moved the Delhi high court on Tuesday, appealing that his custody should not be given to the Punjab Police. On Monday, Bishnoi had approached the Patiala House court, stating that he fears a fake encounter and pleaded that investigations against him be conducted at the Tihar Jail where he is lodged, and not with policemen obtaining his physical custody. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, led by his Bharatiya Janata Party, has taken several steps to create a transparent and sensitive system of governance, minimising the scope for corruption. Addressing a ‘Garib Kalyan Sammelan’ to mark the NDA-led central government’s eight years in power, Modi said headlines before 2014 used to be on nepotism, loot and graft. “Before 2014, the governments considered corruption as an integral part of the system. Instead of fighting the practice, the governments succumbed to it as money allocated for schemes would vanish before reaching the needy,” Modi said. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said the case against cabinet minister Satyendar Jain is “farzi (fraud)”, adding that his government “is honest and does not tolerate corruption”. “We have faith in the judiciary. This farzi (fake) case won’t last. We are following the path of truth,” Kejriwal told reporters. His remarks came a day after Jain was arrested in a money laundering case. “I have personally studied this (Satyendar Jain’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. We neither tolerate corruption nor we do corruption. We have a very honest government. He has been targeted because of political reasons,” Kejriwal said. The Supreme Court on Tuesday told the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that its jurisdiction to initiate cases based on letters was meant for have-nots and those who cannot approach the courts and not for lawmakers. “What is this? NGT is entertaining letter of a Member of Parliament [MP] too,” said a bench of justices BR Gavai and Hima Kohli. “We thought the epistolary jurisdiction of the tribunal [to initiate cases based on letters ] was available for the have-nots, and those who cannot approach Courts and not legislators.” Actor Soha Ali Khan shared a series of photos of herself with daughter Inaaya Naumi Kemmu on her Instagram handle. The Pakistan Cricket Board has shifted next month’s ODI series against the West Indies from Rawalpindi to Multan in the wake of expected protest rallies planned by opposition politicians. Former prime minister Imran Khan is planning protest rallies in the federal capital Islamabad, which is adjacent to Rawalpindi, in the coming days.
